Vinyl restoration

The records are valuable, many of them unique and irreplaceable.

No matter how you store and play your records, they inevitably require care and maintenance.

Dust and dirt particles that settle on the record eventually find their way into the grooves. During playback, surface dirt also accumulates on the stylus and “dampens” the sound. Also: The heat from the stylus melts the surface dust and the release agent used in manufacturing (if not removed).

This creates new pits. Restoration reveals the soundstage, resolution and increases the dynamic range as it was originally on the record.

In some cases, discolorations can also be seen on the surface of the disc. As it turned out, this is often not caused by the plastic, but by a film layer deposited during the evaporation of the plasticizer (used in production) of the disc stored in the inner case for years. With the removal of the film layer, these defects and the associated noises also disappear. Older discs used a PVC inner case, which also evaporates and leaves marks on the disc. Here too, we improved the result, regardless of whether the marks remained on the disc.

The situation is different for plastic that has been physically damaged due to a "needle drop", accidental "tonearm slip" or other "accident". We cannot repair plastic. However, we have witnessed 3 out of 10 cases where we do not hear the record pop with every revolution because the needle is now "sitting at the bottom" of the groove.

This restoration process can provide noticeable sound improvements.
